Animal model development is a long and time-consuming process. The use of stem cell differentiation technology offers a very promising in vitro alternative. genOway is investing mainly in embryonic stem cell differentiation protocols. The ultimate objective is to get pure populations of fully functional neurons, adipocytes, epithelial cells… A major strength of this approach is the biological quality of the cells obtained (close to primary culture) combined with the ability to genetically manipulate their genome (knock-out or knock-in can be performed). These genetically manipulated differentiated cells have become very promising in vitro models to study gene functions, monitor physiological responses and screen for drugs. To support its internal research projects, genOway is leading or involved in several research consortia with academic institutes and industrial partners.
