Scientific relevance & applications

AIF1 (also known as IBA1) is a well-established marker of microglia and macrophages, with strong expression in immune cells of the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. It plays roles in immune activation, inflammation, and phagocytosis. The Aif1-CreERT2 mouse line enables inducible, temporal control of genetic recombination in Aif1-expressing microglial and macrophage populations following tamoxifen administration. This model is particularly suited for studying neuroinflammation, immune responses, and microglial biology.
