Scientific relevance & applications

ATP4B encodes the beta subunit of the gastric H+/K+ ATPase, a proton pump specifically expressed in parietal cells of the stomach and responsible for gastric acid secretion. Its expression is highly restricted to gastric parietal cells. The Atp4b-CreERT2 mouse line enables inducible, temporal control of genetic recombination in Atp4b-expressing parietal cells following tamoxifen administration. This model is well suited for studying gastric physiology, acid secretion, and stomach-related diseases.
