Scientific relevance & applications

CNP encodes 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase, a protein highly expressed in oligodendrocytes and associated with myelin sheath formation in the central nervous system. It is widely used as a marker of myelinating glial cells and plays a role in axon-glia interactions. The Cnp-CreERT2 mouse line enables inducible, temporal control of genetic recombination in Cnp-expressing oligodendrocytes following tamoxifen administration. This model is particularly suited for studying myelination, demyelinating diseases, and glial cell biology in neuroscience research.
