Scientific relevance & applications

DKK3 is a secreted modulator of Wnt signaling with well-documented expression in the retina, particularly in retinal progenitor cells during development and in Müller glial cells in the adult eye. Dkk3 expression has been implicated in retinal homeostasis, neuroprotection, and responses to injury, making Dkk3-CreERT2 a valuable tool for inducible, cell-state-dependent genetic manipulation in retinal research. Following tamoxifen administration, this model enables temporal control of recombination in Dkk3-expressing retinal and neuronal populations and is intended for use in combination with floxed alleles. As Cre activity reflects endogenous Dkk3 expression at the time of induction, validation using reporter or target-specific assays is recommended (e.g. PMID: 22910798, PMID: 27866302).
