Scientific relevance & applications

HNF4A is a nuclear transcription factor with central roles in liver development, hepatocyte differentiation, and metabolic regulation. It is highly expressed in hepatocytes and also present in other epithelial tissues, where it regulates gene networks involved in metabolism and homeostasis. The Hnf4a-CreERT2 mouse line enables inducible, temporal control of genetic recombination in Hnf4a-expressing cells following tamoxifen administration. This model is widely applicable for studying liver function, metabolic diseases, and epithelial biology through conditional gene manipulation.
