Scientific relevance & applications

INS1 encodes insulin, a hormone specifically produced by pancreatic beta cells and essential for glucose homeostasis. Its expression is highly restricted to beta cells within the islets of Langerhans. The Ins1-CreERT2 mouse line enables inducible, temporal control of genetic recombination in insulin-producing beta cells following tamoxifen administration. This model is widely used for studying pancreatic function, diabetes, and beta cell biology through conditional gene manipulation.
