Scientific relevance & applications

MITF is a master transcription factor regulating melanocyte development, pigmentation, and survival. It is expressed in melanocytes and pigment-producing cells of the skin and eye. The Mitf-CreERT2 mouse line enables inducible, temporal control of genetic recombination in Mitf-expressing pigment cells following tamoxifen administration. This model is particularly suited for studying melanocyte biology, pigmentation disorders, and melanoma research.
