NPHS2 encodes podocin, a key structural protein of the slit diaphragm in podocytes of the kidney glomerulus. Its expression is highly specific to podocytes and is essential for maintaining the filtration barrier. The Nphs2-CreERT2 mouse line enables inducible, temporal control of genetic recombination in Nphs2-expressing podocytes following tamoxifen administration. This model is widely used for studying kidney function, glomerular biology, and renal disease mechanisms.
